The Rookie
Game Three, in front of 32,000 at Horizon Field, matched 14-year-veteran Yankee ace Whitey Ford against the 19-year-old Nevada rookie Dave McNally (11-8, 2.77). New York skipper Ralph Houk had originally slated his own rookie, Al Downing, to start Game Three, but the 10-4 Duster victory in Game Two made him reconsider. Ben Naylor started Cam Carreon behind the plate rather than Johnny Blanchard, explaining that Carreon's .326 average against left-handed pitching beat Blanchard's .208 mark. Ford and McNally put on a clinic in the early frames and Vic Power's double in the home 3rd was the first hit of the game. Ken Hubbs opened the Nevada 5th with a walk and Carreon and McNally singled to load the bases. Lee Maye's grounder scored Hubbs. The Yankees issued a pass to slugger Billy Williams, loading the bases again, but Ford induced a ground out from Hector Lopez to end the Nevada threat. McNally seemed unfazed by the pressure of the slim 1-0 lead. It was Elston Howard, in the Yankee 8th, that ruined the Nevada hurler's bid for a no-hitter. In the 9th, McNally walked pinch hitter Steve Bilko and Roger Maris. At that point Naylor made the decision to relieve McNally. "It was a tough call to make," confessed Nails, after the game. "It would have been great for the kid to get a complete game shutout in his first World Series appearance." But McNally had thrown 109 pitches, and Nails had a hunch the middle of the Yankee order might be on the verge of figuring the starter out. In came closer Bill Dailey with two on and one gone. Eddie Mathews popped up and Dailey K'd Mickey Mantle for the final out. The crowd went wild, the Dusters swarmed Dailey on the mound, and then carried McNally off the field, just as the Yankees had done for Game One-winner Ralph Terry. Conn Hudson's unshakeable faith in the rookie starter seemed fully vindicated, and Nevada's 2-1 lead in the series was beginning to worry the New York club, the oddsmakers, and the pundits who had predicted smooth sailing for the Yankees.
