Terry Blanks the Dusters
"If he gets into a rythym, we're in trouble," admitted Ben Naylor,  referring to New York starter Ralph Terry (19-7), who had pitched seven complete games during the regular season. Nails saw his worst fears realized in Game One, in a Yankee Stadium packed to overflowing with 67,000 fans. Conn Hudson acknowledged the possibility that the Duster players were somewhat intimidated by the crowd and the venue, but the biggest problem was their inability to solve Terry. Still, Nevada had some chances -- two men on with one out in the 2nd and two men on in the 6th, again with one out. "You're not going to get too many opportunities, so you better take advantage of them -- and we didn't," said Naylor in the postgame press conference. Hudson pointed out the fine pitching by Nevada ace Bob Shaw (23-3), who held the potent Yankees offense scoreless until the 6th. Shaw walked five batters in his six innings, but this was by design; Naylor and pitching coach Ray Narleski had decided that, no matter what, Shaw should not give in to the middle of the New York lineup, consisting of Mickey Mantle, Eddie Matthews and Yogi Berra. "If Bob got behind in the count, they walked," said Nails. Berra drew two intentional passes, Mantle three. It was Mantle who walked in the 6th and scored the first Yankee run on a two-out single by Berra. Then Elston Howard doubled on a 1-2 pitch to score Berra, and Tony Kubek followed with a knock to right that eluded a diving Vic Power, and Howard scored to make it 3-0 Yankees. So it remained -- and to add insult to injury, Nevada shortstop Jerry Adair would miss the next four games with a sprained finger. The oddsmakers had made it 8-5 against the Dusters going into Game One; with the shutout and the injury to Adair, the odds shot up to 3-1. But Hudson didn't seem worried. "If you think they're going to just roll right over us," he told reporters, "then you're mistaken."
