The Dusters Get Even
In the early going, Game Two appeared to be following the same script as the previous day's contest, with Yankee starter Bob Turley (10-9, 4.31) holding the Dusters scoreless through four innings. As in Game One, Nevada had opportunities -- two on with one out in the 1st, a pair of baserunners in the 3rd -- but came away empty-handed. Nevada's Joe Horlen (16-8, 2.54) gave up three hits, including doubles by Tony Kubek and Bobby Richardson, in the home 3rd, and the Dusters faced a 2-0 deficit. They got their first runs of the series in the top of the 5th when Vic Power doubled, Lee Maye walked, and Hector Lopez and Tom Tresh (playing shortstop in place of the injured Jerry Adair) hit back-to-back RBI singles. In the 6th, Power got his own RBI single and Billy Williams laced a triple into the right field gap for two more. The Yankees answered right back with two runs in their half of the inning, trimming the Duster lead to 5-4. In the 8th, second baseman Ken Hubbs got the second of three hits, a single, reliever Jim Brewer bunted his way on, and Lee Maye clubbed the first home run of the series, a three-run, 475-foot shot to center. The Dusters weren't quite done; in the 9th Johnny Blanchard, Clete Boyer and Hubbs singled to load the bases for Vic Power, who drove in two more runs with another one-bagger. Brewer stymied the Yankee batters in the 8th as he'd done in the 7th, Bob Duliba finished the job in the 9th, and the Dusters tied the series with a decisive 10-4 victory. "I think the Yankees have been served notice that they've got a fight on their hands," said New York broadcaster Red Barber. Hubbs was 2-for-3 with a walk, Power 4-for-6 with two runs scored and three RBI, and Lee Maye finished 2-for-3 with three walks, three runs, and three ribbies. The clubs packed their bags and headed for Las Vegas the next morning.
