The
NEVADA DUSTERS
The Story of a Major League Baseball Franchise
1962 World Series
GAME SIX
October 25, 1962
Yankee Stadium (NewYork, NY)
Game One     Game Two     Game Three     Game Five     Game Seven
The sixth game was a pitcher's duel, as Whitey Ford took on Joe Horlen. Horlen cruised through the Yankee order the first time, allowing nary a hit. But Tony Kubek led off the home 4th with a single and Roger Maris walked. The Dusters' hopes of getting out of the frame without damage rose as Eddie Mathews hit into a 5-5-3 double play that erased the lead runner, but Mickey Mantle singled in Maris to make it 1-0 New York. In the 6th Kubek again led off with a single, and again Mathews hit into a double play, and this time the Yankees didn't score. They didn't need to. Ford pitched superbly, allowing just six hits in nine innings. The Dusters had few opportunities. Vic Power led off the 1st with a single but was thrown out going for an extra base. Lee Maye singled and Billy Williams moved him over with a grounder, but Hector Lopez struck out to end the inning. It was the 9th before Nevada had another baserunner on second. Lee Maye turned a one-out single into a double, and Billy Williams reached on a fielding error by left-fielder Yoga Berra. Lopez grounded out and Clete Boyer hit a line drive speared by a leaping Bill Skowron at first base to end the game. Maye accounted for three of the Nevada hits and the only extra base hit, a double. The series was tied, and the consensus among the baseball pundits was that the Dusters had missed their chance to put the Yankees away -- and now the momentum had swung back to the New York ballclub.
