The
NEVADA DUSTERS
The Story of a Major League Baseball Franchise
1962 World Series
GAME SEVEN
October 26, 1962
Yankee Stadium (NewYork, NY)
Game One     Game Two     Game Three     Game Five     Game Six
The seventh and deciding game of the series pitted New York's veteran Ralph Terry, who had shut out the Dusters in Game 1, against rookie Dave McNally, who had pitched a shutout in Game 3. Nevada threatened in the 2nd with two on and one out before Clete Boyer grounded into an inning-ending double play. The Yankees found themselves in a similar situation -- with the same result -- in the 3rd, and the game remained scoreless until the 4th, when Bill Skowron and Roy McMillan hit RBI singles. Johnny Blanchard opened the Nevada 5th with a solo homer to make it 2-1 Yankees, and in the 6th Billy Williams singled, Hector Lopez tripled, and Jerry Adair knocked in Lopez to put the Dusters on top 3-2. Roy McMillan's second RBI single of the day tied the game in the 6th. Nevada's Barney Schultz and New York reliever Luis Arroyo battled through the late innings, and after nine the score was still 3-3. In the Nevada 10th, Hal Reniff struck out the first batter, Ken Hubbs, and Ben Naylor sent Gordy Coleman to the plate to pinch hit for Schultz. "This was the last game," said Nails later, "and relievers weren't going to come up to bat in the late innings."

Mitch Cullin, the voice of the Dusters on 970 AM, Las Vegas, led listeners through the at-bat. "The count is one and two on Coleman. Reniff winds and delivers. Coleman swings. High fly ball to right ... Maris is running for the corner ... Is it fair? ... Is it foul? ... Maris looks up ... IT'S A HOME RUN! Gordy Coleman hits a home run! The Dusters take the lead! Coleman delivers in the clutch!"

Naylor refused to let the rest of the team swarm Coleman as he came home. "It ain't over yet," said Nails. So Coleman's teammates settled for greeting him in front of the visitors' dugout, while the 67,000 fans in Yankee Stadium watched in grim silence.

Naylor sent closer Bill Dailey to the mound for the bottom of the 10th to face Maris, Berra and Mathews, while posting Johnny Schaive at second and Tom Tresh in center field. Berra grounded to first. Maris battled but ended up grounding to shortstop Jerry Adair, who threw him out with ease. On the first pitch from Dailey, Eddie Mathews lifted a high fly ball to left ....

Cullins: "Lopez is going back ... back ... he's at the wall ... he ... he makes the catch! The ballgame is over! The Dusters have won! The Dusters have won the World Series! The Dusters are World Champions! What a series! What a season! Can you believe it?"
