The
NEVADA DUSTERS
The Story of a Major League Baseball Franchise
1962 World Series
GAME FIVE
October 23, 1962
Horizon Field (Las Vegas, NV)
Game One     Game Two     Game Three     Game Six
The Duster had high hopes of wrapping up their first world championship in the fifth game of the series. They were at home. They had their ace, Bob Shaw, starting. And they were facing Bob Turley, whom they had ambushed in Game Two for five runs on nine hits, on the way to a 10-4 victory. Early on, though, Shaw looked hittable; in the 2nd the Yankees loaded the bases, but Bobby Richardson grounded out to end the threat. In the 4th, four singles and a throwing error charged to Nevada second baseman Ken Hubbs resulted in a 3-0 New York lead. As for Turley, the Dusters could muster just three hits against him in his seven innings on the hill. One of those hits was a Billy Williams solo homer -- what turned out to be Nevada's only run. But for Billy's blow, the Dusters never got a runner past first base. With Shaw gone in the 4th inning, the Nevada bullpen -- Schultz, Brewer, Richert and Dailey -- kept the Yankees quiet. Of the nine hits compiled by the Yankees only one was for extra bases, a double by catcher Elston Howard. Ben Naylor admitted in the postgame press conference that his players were deeply disappointed in themselves. Now they had to return to Yankee Stadium. All they had to do was win one of the final two games.Yet no one in the Nevada clubhouse thought that would be easy to do.

There was a full house at Horizon Field for Game 5 of the World Series
