Conn Hudson praised Billy Williams and Johnny Blanchard as worthy recipients of All-Star honors, but was quite vocal in his disbelief that starting pitcher Bob Shaw (13-2, 2.90 ERA) had not been honored. "It's as much a mystery to me," said Hudson, "as the fact that Roberto Clemente wasn't selected either." Though 23-year veteran Stan "The Man" Musial of the Cardinals had been selected by fan voting to be the starting left fielder for the NL All-Stars, Billy Williams played nearly the entire game at that position, with Musial getting one at-bat as a pinch-hitter. Likewise, Johnny Blanchard, voted onto the starting lineup as catcher, got one pinch-hit at-bat while Ed Bailey of the Giants played much of the game as backstop. Neither Duster player contributed much to the NL All-Star cause, with Williams going 0-for-4 and Blanchard 0-for-1.

The NL struck first with Don Blasingame's RBI single following a Willie Mays double in the 3rd. Ernie Banks' solo homer in the 4th made it 2-0 NL. The AL cut the lead in half in the bottom of the 5th and scored four runs on six hits in the 6th with Joe Gibbon on the mound. The Yankee contingent of Mantle, Maris, Berra and Howard all singled, as did Luis Aparicio and Nellie Fox. Yankee reliever Hal Reniff held the NL scoreless in the top of the 7th, and in the bottom of the inning Gus Triandos hit a two-run homer off Don Elston to give the AL a 7-2 lead. With two on and one out in the 8th, Reniff fanned Banks and Roy Sievers, and in the 9th Don Mossi allowed just one hit, a single by Ed Bailey. For the NL, Willie Mays went 3-for-5 with a run scored, while the AL's Mantle was 2-for-4 with two runs and Elston Howard finished 3-for-4 with a pair of RBIs. Yet it was Triandos who was awarded the All-Star MVP trophy. There were 43,500 on hand at Chicago's Wrigley Field to watch the game.
