1962 World Series Recap
How They Won
Al Childress, Las Vegas Sun
The Nevada Dusters won the World Series the only way you can when you're playing a club like the New York Yankees -- good hitting, good pitching, and good defense. But, most of all, good pitching. The Duster starters held the vaunted Yankee home run machine to just two round-trippers in seven games. Only Bob Shaw, a Cy Young candidate, had rough sledding in both of his starts. The rest of the starters performed very well. Tony Cloninger even pitched a complete game shutout. The Nevada bullpen had a combined ERA of 0.00 in sixteen innings. Mickey Mantle had a .148 average in the series. Eddie Matthews finished with .130, and Roger Maris batted just .045. In other words, the middle of that Yankee order was completely shut down.
The Yankee pitching was effective, too. Whitey Ford allowed just one run in his seventeen innings of work, while Ralph Terry allowed eight in three starts for a solid 3.60 ERA. They were the ones who brought the Yankees back to tie the series after being down three games to one. New York scored a total of four runs in Games Five and Six. The Yankee hurlers held the Dusters to just one run in those contests.
In the end it came down to one big clutch hit by Gordy Coleman in the 10th inning of the seventh game. That was another one of those "shots heard 'round the world." That seems to be the way the Nevada Dusters played the whole season, scrapping through those rocky early months, winning a tight pennant race in the last days of the regular season, usually finding a way to keep themselves in a game and, more often than not, coming up with the late-inning heroics. Well done, World Champions.
