[August 24, Game 1]
The Dusters hoped to continue their winning streak as they played host to the Reds, with Joe Horlen (12-6) taking on Jim O'Toole (10-10). It was all Nevada as the Dusters collected eleven hits while Horlen and reliever Jim Brewer held the opposition to just three. Billy Williams started the fireworks with a three-run homer in the 1st. It was his 25th dinger of the year. An RBI single by Ken Hubbs in the 4th and a two-run double by Tom Tresh in the 7th made it 6-0. In the home 8th Cincy reliever Johnny Klippstein walked in a Nevada run with the bases loaded. Horlen pitched 7.1 innings, allowing a pair of hits while striking out four, and even though his pitch count was low (74), Ben Naylor chose to replace the injury-prone starter with Brewer. "We're walking a tightrope with the pitching situation," explained Conn Hudson. "With a six run lead there was no need to leave Joe in for the whole game." Williams was 2-for-4 with three ribbies on the day, but others in the lineup did well at the plate, too -- Tresh was 2-for-3 with a walk and Hubbs 2-for-4. With Pittsburgh and San Francisco also winning, the Dusters were tied with the Giants for second-place in the NL, 1.5 games behind the Pirates.
Lineup: Power, Lopez, Williams, Blanchard, Boyer, Schaive, Tresh, Hubbs, Horlen
Record: 74-47
Dusters 7, Reds 1
[August 25, Game 2]
The Nevada win streak came to an ugly end in the second game as the Reds unlimbered their bats and accumulated five home runs -- a hit parade that Dave McNally (9-6), in his first start back from the DL, and nearly the entire Duster bullpen was powerless to stop. The first dinger of the game, however, was a two-run shot by Billy Williams in the 2st (his 26th, three behind team leader Johnny Blanchard). Cincy tied the game in the 2nd and went ahead 4-2 courtesy of the first of two Frank Robinson homers in the 3rd, one that was followed by another long ball off the bat of Jerry Lynch. The Dusters cut the deficit in half in the home 4th but Reds first baseman Rogelio Alvarez opened the Cincinnati six with a solo blast at reliever Jim Roland's expense, and shortstop Leo Cardenas hit an RBI double to make it 6-3. Hank Foiles homered against reliever Bob Duliba in the 7th, and Robinson hit his second of the game in the 8th, and it was 8-3 Reds. Ken Hubbs tripled and scored on a Lou Johnson single in the Nevada 8th but that was much too little too late. Hubbs was 2-for-3 on the day while Lou Johnson, starting in left to give Hector Lopez a day off, went 2-for-3 with a RBI and a run scored. McNally suffered the loss.
Lineup: Power, Maye, Williams, Blanchard, Boyer, Hubbs, Johnson, Schaive, McNally
Record: 74-48
Reds 8, Dusters 4
[August 26, Game 3]
The Dusters faced the formidable Reds ace Jim Maloney in the rubber game, and while they collected plenty of hits -- ten -- against him, they managed just one run in the eight innings he was on the mound. With Nevada trailing 2-0 in the bottom of the 6th, Billy Williams doubled and scored on a Hector Lopez single fired down the first base line. Cincy tacked on another run in the 8th, making it 3-1, and things were looking bleak for the Dusters until, in the bottom of the 9th Reds reliever Jim Brosnan issued walks to Tom Tresh and Williams and Gordy Coleman hit an infield single to load the bases with two outs for Lopez, who delivered again with a single that scored a pair and tied the game. A Hank Foiles homer to open the Cincy 11th put the Dusters in a hole yet again. In the bottom of the inning, pinch-hitter Lou Johnson walked and Coleman singled before Lee Maye hit a seeing-eye single through the right side that scored Johnson. Next up, Williams hit a slow roller to short and Coleman, now on third, beat out the throw home to give Nevada a 5-4 win. Coleman, who started at first, was 3-for-6 on the day, Lopez 3-for-5 with three ribbies. Nevada starter Pete Richert pitched five scoreless innings but it was closer Bill Dailey (4-4) who got the win.
