Cincinnati Reds (52-50) @ Nevada Dusters (59-43)
August 3-5, 1962
Horizon Field, Las Vegas, NV

DL: Roger Repoz (CF-Montana Wolves), broken ankle, three months. Clay Carroll (P-Tucson Stingers), mild shoulder separation, eight days.

SIGNINGS
NEV signed a 3-year, $3,050,000 extension with Vic Power (1B).

Cincinnati Reds Game 1 starting lineup:
Don Blasingame (2B), Marty Keough (LF), Vada Pinson (CF), Frank Robinson (RF), Leo Cardenas (SS), Gene Freese (3B), Hank Foiles (C), Rogelio Alvarez (1B), Joey Jay (SP)

[August 3, Game 1]
Dave McNally (8-4) took on Cincy's Joey Jay (6-8) before nearly 15,000 fans at Horizon Field, and Billy Williams hit his 20th home run of the season to give the Dusters an early lead in the bottom of the 1st. Singles by Clete Boyer and Jerry Adair and a walk drawn by Johnny Blanchard loaded the bases in the Nevada 2nd for Vic Power, who drove in one run with a single before Jay walked Lee Maye to make it 3-0 Dusters. In the 5th McNally reached on an error and Lee Maye hit one down the left field line and turned a triple into a two-run, inside-the-park homer to put the Reds in a 5-0 hole. Cincinnati mounted a threat in the 6th with two on and one out, but Leo Cardenas grounded into a double play. They finally scored a run in the 7th but that was all McNally would give up. With a four-run edge, Naylor summoned Claude Raymond to the hill in the 9th, and Frenchy pitched a scoreless inning. For the first time since mid-June the Dusters had strung together four wins in a row.
Lineup: Power, Maye, Williams, Lopez, Boyer, Adair, Blanchard, Hubbs, McNally
Record: 60-43
Dusters 5, Reds 1
[August 4, Game 2]
Though the day off prior to the series would have allowed Ben Naylor to skip Pete Richert in the rotation, Nails decided to let the 22-year-old southpaw pitch -- and was rewarded with a fine outing as Richert struck out six and allowed just three hits in 6.1 scoreless innings. It was Vic Power's day at the plate, as the first baseman (who had just signed a three-year extension with the Dusters) went 3-for-4 with two homers and four RBIs. Power's first long ball was a solo blast in the 1st; Nevada took a 2-0 lead in that inning, and added three more runs in the 5th as Power hit his second dinger, this time with two men on base. Bob Duliba relieved Richert in the 7th with a 5-0 lead, two men on and one out. Leo Cardenas grounded to first for a 3-6-3 double play. In the Reds 8th Rogelio Alvarez hit a one-out double but was stranded at second, and in the top of the 9th Duliba retired the side in order. Richert's record went to 5-3, and his 2.08 ERA was the best on the Nevada pitching staff. With their fifth consecutive victory the Dusters found themselves four games behind the Giants and just 5.5 behind the first-place Pirates.
Lineup: Power, Mayes, Williams, Boyer, Adair, Blanchard, Jones, Tresh, Richert
Record: 61-43
Dusters 5, Reds 0
[August 5, Game 3]
The five-game winning streak ran into a major roadblock in the form of Cincy starter Jim O'Toole (8-10) and rightfielder Frank Robinson. O'Toole pitched a complete game shutout -- only the second time the Dusters had been blanked all year. Nevada had a chance to break scoreless tie in the 5th, with a man on first and third and only one out, only to have Vic Power hit into a double play. Robinson drew a walk in the 7th, stole second, and scored on a Rogelio Alvarez single. He struck again in the 9th, hitting a one-out triple and then scoring on a suicide squeeze play as Leo Cardenas laid down a perfect bunt. Nevada starter Joe Horlen allowed just four hits in seven innings of work but still took the loss for a record of 11-6. The Dusters accumulated just five hits, with Jerry Adair responsible for two of them. Fortunately, the Giants and Pirates also lost, but two wins in a row put the fourth-place Los Angeles Dodgers (60-46) just 1.5 games back of Nevada.
Lineup: Power, Maye, Williams, Lopez, Boyer, Blanchard, Adair, Schaive, Horlen
Record: 61-44
Reds 2, Dusters 0
