[July 15, Game 1]
The San Francisco Giants were in second place in the NL, 1.5 games behind the Pirates and three games in front of the visiting Dusters. Ben Naylor considered this game the ultimate test for Tony Cloninger (3-6), who had pitched well in his last two outings. Cloninger met the skipper's expectations this time, allowing one run on two hits in seven innings of work. That Giants run came in the 4th -- a solo home run by catcher Tom Haller. The problem for the Dusters was their inability to handle the screwball relied on by San Francisco starter Mike McCormick (3-3). They finally managed to tie the game in the 7th as Jerry Adair walked and then scored on a Tom Tresh two-bagger. The game was still tied at the end of nine. The Dusters had their chances in extra innings -- Gordy Coleman doubled in the 10th but was left stranded; Jerry Adair opened the 12th with a walk and got to second, but was stranded; and there were two on with two out in the 13th for Clete Boyer, who popped up. With Jim Brewer on the mound in the home 13th, pinch-hitter Matty Alou singled, reached second on an Elio Chacon grounder, and scored the winning run when Harvey Kuenn hit one up the middle that somehow eluded a diving Jerry Adair. It was the third straight loss for the Dusters, who had scored just two runs in those three games.
Lineup: Power, Morton, Lopez, Blanchard, Boyer, Adair, Tresh, Schaive, Cloninger
Record: 50-38
Giants 2, Dusters 1
[July 16, Game 2]
It was more of the same today -- great pitching and precious little hitting -- as Nevada ace Bob Shaw (13-2) took on Jack Sanford (7-4). Each starter allowed four hits in 7.2 and 7.0 innings respectively, but two of the Nevada hits were long balls as the Duster sluggers came through again. Hector Lopez hit his downtowner in the 4th, and Johnny Blanchard collected his twenty-first dinger of the year in the 7th. The Giants occasionally threatened, as in the 2nd when Jim Davenport hit a two-out triple, or the 4th when Felipe Alou doubled, or the 7th when Jose Pagan did likewise. But each time Shaw got the last out. In the home 8th, leading 2-0 with two outs, Naylor decided to pull Shaw, who was nearing his pitch count limit, and called on Bob Duliba from the bullpen to face the heart of the San Francisco order. "If they were gonna beat us it was probably going to be McCovey, Mays or Alou, and they'd seen Shaw's pitches three times already," explained Nails. Duliba got the job done, getting McCovey to ground out to end the 8th, and retiring the side (including Mays and Alou) in the 9th. Billy Williams' post-All-Star break slump (1 for 18) continued. Shaw's record improved to 14-2. He had not lost a game since April 30.
Lineup: Coleman, Maye, Williams, Lopez, Adair, Blanchard, Boyer, Tresh, Shaw
Record: 51-38
Dusters 2, Giants 0
[July 17, Game 3]
The Dusters faced the ace of the San Francisco staff, Juan Marichal (13-2) in the final game of the series. Nevada starter Dave McNally (3-6) had a rough outing, allowing five runs on seven hits in the first four innings. The Dusters scored a run in the 2nd, but Felipe Alou and Jim Davenport doubled as the Giants collected three runs on three hits in the bottom of the inning to take the lead. Vic Power's solo homer in the 3rd made it 4-2. The Giants added another run in the bottom of the inning, and in the 5th Willie Mays tripled and scored on an Alou two-bagger to make it 5-2, sending McNally packing. Naylor took the opportunity to summon Jim Umbricht from the bullpen. Umbricht had pitched just two innings in the past month, and Nails wanted to put him to the test; he responded by going 2.2 innings without allowing a hit. Marichal pitched a complete game and the Dusters could do nothing until the 9th, putting two men on with one out. Gordy Coleman and Johnny Blanchard grounded out to end the game. The Dusters had lost both series of the road trip and six of their last ten, but clung to third place in the NL, four games back of San Francisco and one game in front of the Dodgers.
