S. Louis Cardinals (8-4) @ Nevada Dusters (9-3)
April 16-18, 1963
Horizon Field (Las Vegas, NV)

DL: Jim Bouton (sp), pulled groin, 14 days; Claude Raymond (rp), bruised foot, 1 day; Hector Lopez (lf), sore knee, 2 days; Wayne Granger (rp-Montana Wolves R), fractured eye bone, 6 days.

St. Louis Cardinals Game 1 starting lineup:
Julian Javier (2b), Curt Flood (cf), Stan Musial (lf), Willie McCovey (1b), Ken Boyer (3b), George Altman (rf), Gene Oliver (c), Julio Gotay (ss), Larry Jackson (sp)

Game 1, April 16
Starter Dave McNally (2-0) had another solid outing in the opener, allowing three runs -- one of them a homer to Curt Flood in the 1st inning -- on six hits in 6.2 innings, striking out five. But it was Billy Williams who proved to be the Redbirds' nemesis today. Williams drove in Maury Wills with a single to tie the game 1-1 in the bottom of the 1st. In the 3rd he hit a two-run homer (again with Wills on base in front of him). And in the 6th he hit a solo homer, finishing the day 4-for-4 with two runs and five RBI. Johnny Blanchard also homered in the 6th, his fifth long ball of the season. The Cards had their chances; in the 6th they put two on with no outs, but McNally came back to get the next three batters. In the 8th they had two on with no outs again and this time Barney Schultz held them in check. McNally got the win and Bill Dailey a save in the 6-3 decision. Maury Wills was 3-for-4 with three runs scored and the Dusters remained a half-game ahead of the Reds atop the NL.
Lineup: Wills, Power, Maye, Williams, Boyer, Blanchard, Tresh, Hubbs, McNally
Record: 10-3
Dusters 6, Cardinals 3

Game 2, April 17
The Dusters ran into a roadblock by the name of Bob Gibson, who struck out nine batters on his way to a complete game. Nevada's Phil Niekro was touched for a two-run homer by Willie McCovey in the first and gave up another run in the 5th, his last inning on the mound. Reliever Jim Roland took over and pitched well in his first outing of 1963, allowing no runs on three hits in 3.1 innings. The Dusters rallied in the 6th as Roland led off with a single and Maury Wills and Gordy Coleman, giving Vic Power a day off at first, followed suit to load the bases for Lee Maye, who singled in Roland. Coleman tagged up and scored on a Clete Boyer sac fly and Johnny Blanchard drew a walk to load the bases again, but Tom Tresh popped up to end the frame. The Dusters never threatened again. Wills went 3-for-4 with a stolen base while Niekro (1-2) took the loss. It was a costly victory for the Cards, however, as they lost catcher Gene Oliver for three weeks due to an ankle stress fracture.
Lineup: Wills, Coleman, Maye, Williams, Boyer, Blanchard, Tresh, Hubbs, Niekro
Record: 10-4
Cardinals 3, Dusters 2

Game 3, April 18
The home runs were flying out of Horizon Field in the rubber game that matched Pete Richert against Bob Buhl. Willie McCovey's leadoff homer in the 2nd gave the Cards a 1-0 lead until the 4th, when a pair of singles and a Redbird error loaded the bases for Jerry Adair, who knocked in two with a scorching single down the first base line. A third run scored on a Richert grounder. Lee Maye led off the Nevada 5th with a three-bagger before Clete Boyer homered, extending the Duster lead to 5-1. But St. Louis wasn't done. Stan Musial's 6th inning two-run dinger, followed by a solo roundtripper by Ken Boyer (brother to Nevada third baseman Clete) made it 5-4. Clete answered right back in the bottom of the 6th with a two-run single. Pinch hitter Gordy Coleman added his first long ball of the season in the 7th, and it was 8-4. Clete Boyer (4-for-5) hit his second homer in the 8th just for good measure, giving him six RBI on the day. Jim Brewer pitched effectively in the last two innings and Richert (5.0ip, 5h, 2bb, 3r, 3er, 2k, 4.38era) collected his first win. The Dusters had won the first five series of '63 and were one game ahead of the Reds atop the NL.
Lineup: Wills, Power, Maye, Williams, Blanchard, Boyer, Tresh, Adair, Richert
Record: 11-4
Dusters 10, Cardinals 4
