PHILADELPHIA PHILLIES(2-7) @ NEVADA DUSTERS (7-2)
April 13-15, 1963
Horizon Field (Las Vegas, NV)

DL: Barney Schultz (rp), sore tricep, 2 days; Hector Lopez (lf), sore knee, 5 days; Wayne Granger (rp-Montana Wolves R), fractured eye bone, 9 days; Jesus Alou (rf--Tucson Stingers A), shoulder bursitis, 2 days.

Philadelphia Phillies Game 1 starting lineup:
Tony Taylor (2b), Leon Wagner (lf), Jackie Brandt (cf), Dick Allen (1b), Bob Allison (rf), Clay Dalrymple (c), Billy Klaus (3b), Billy Consolo (ss), Chris Short (sp)

Game 1, April 13
The Dusters' long home stand continued with their third series against the Phillies, as knuckleballer Phil Niekro got his second start. The Phillies took a 3-1 lead in the 3rd when a fielding error by second baseman Johnny Schaive helped load the bases for Dick Allen, who drove in a run, and Bob Allison, who singled through the right side for two more. The Dusters close the gap to 3-2, but in the 6th Philadelphia collected four runs on four hits, including a three-run homer by Bob Skinner off reliever Pete Richert to give them a 7-2 advantage. The Dusters rallied in the bottom of the 6th for three runs and a Tom Tresh homer in the 7th made it 7-6 but the Phillies held on to win. Niekro (5.2ip, 8h, 2bb, 6r, 3er, 5k, 2.03) got the loss while Maury Wills went 3-for-4 with a pair of runs scored. The decision was made that -- for the time being, at least -- Niekro would be retained as the 5th starter and Jim Roland would be sent down to AAA to make room for Richert in the bullpen.
Lineup: Wills, Power, Maye, Williams, Boyer, Blanchard, Tresh, Schaive, Niekro
Record: 7-3
Phillies 7, Dusters 6

Game 2, April 14
Back from the DL, Joe Horlen took the mound against former teammate Steve Barber, and Clete Boyer gave Horlen a 3rd inning lead as he tripled and then scored on a Jerry Adair single. But in the Philadelphia 4th, with men at first and third, Horlen threw a wild pitch and the tying run scored before Bobby Wine hit an RBI double to put the Phillies on top 2-1. In the Nevada 8th Billy Williams scored from second when Tom Tresh singled through the right side, eluding the tag at home. Vic Power doubled with two out in the bottom of the 9th and Lee Maye came through with a RBI single to win the game 3-2. Horlen allowed two runs on four hits through seven innings, but Claude Raymond, who kept the Phillies in check in the final two innings, earned his second win of the year. Wills (2-for-5) continued to prosper in the leadoff spot, while Tom Tresh finished the day 3-for-4. Of continuing concern was the .162 average for Billy Williams, who could not seem to get on the track. Conn Hudson and Ben Naylor expressed complete confidence in Williams, but the press wondered how long Billy would remain in the lineup with those kind of numbers.
Lineup: Wills, Power, Maye, Williams, Boyer, Blanchard, Tresh, Adair, Horlen
Record: 8-3
Dusters 3, Phillies 2

Game 3, April 15
Tony Cloninger and his mound opponent, Dennis Bennett, put on a display of pitching prowess that kept the game a scoreless tie until the 6th when Vic Power stretched a single into a double, Lee Maye drew a walk, and Billy Williams hit a RBI single. Maye scored from third when Clete Boyer hit into a double play, and Nevada led 2-0. One inning later the Dusters engaged in a two-out rally that saw Maye hit a bases-loaded two-bagger for three RBIs, Williams drive one over the right field fence for two more runs, and Johnny Blanchard contribute another two-run homer for a total of seven runs on four hits. The Phillies got a run in the 8th, but that was all, as Cloninger (6.2ip, 2h, 2bb, 0r, 0er, 3k, 0.95era) go 3-0 on the year. Conn Hudson was encouraged that Williams went 2-for-3 with a walk. "Hopefully," said the GM, "this means Billy is climbing out of his slump." The Dusters remained a half-game ahead of the Reds and one game up on Pittsburgh and St. Louis. The bad news was that Jim Bouton pulled a groin in practice and would be on the DL for two weeks, while Claude Raymond was out for a couple of days with a bruised foot. Pete Richert returned to the starting rotation and Jim Roland, who'd hardly had time to unpack his bags in Bakersfield, was recalled to the bullpen.
Lineup: Wills, Power, Maye, Williams, Boyer, Blanchard, Tresh, Adair, Cloninger
Record: 8-3
Dusters 9, Phillies 1
