Los Angeles Dodgers (69-64) @ Nevada Dusters (79-50)
September 5-7, 1962
Horizon Field, Las Vegas, NV

DL:  Roger Repoz (CF-Montana Wolves), broken ankle, 63 days.

Los Angeles Dodgers  Game 1 starting lineup:
Maury Wills (SS), Jim Gilliam (3B), Willie Davis (CF), Duke Snider (RF), Wally Moon (LF), Johnny Roseboro (C), Roy Gleason (1B), Jim Snyder (2B), Don Drysdale (SP)

[September 5, Game 1]
The Dusters faced Don Drysdale in the first game of the series, and Ben Naylor told his players that the secret to beating "Donny" was to get to him early. The Dodgers took a 1-0 lead in the top of the 1st, but Nevada came roaring back in the bottom of the inning as two fielding errors and Johnny Blanchard's thirty-first dinger of the season put them on top 4-1. Lee Maye opened the home 3rd with a homer, and later in the frame Clete Boyer clubbed one over the left field fence for two more runs, and Drysdale's day was finished. Nevada starter Tony Cloninger (10-7) had won his last five decisions and turned in a solid performance -- three runs on five hits in five innings of work. The Dusters tacked on two more runs before all was said and done, the last thanks to another Dodger error, the third of the night charged to the visiting team. Barney Schultz and Jim Umbricht came out of the Nevada bullpen to pitch four scoreless innings. Billy Williams sat this one out, so Naylor had Hector Lopez (2-for-4) in left, Maye (3-for-5) in right, and Tom Tresh (1-for-3 with a walk) in center. Jerry Adair went 3-for-5 and scored three runs. "We were hitting up and down the lineup," said Nails, "and that's what I like to see." The exception: Vic Power, who ended up 0-for-5. With Pittsburgh losing, the Dusters found themselves just a half-game out of first place.
Lineup: Power, Maye, Lopez, Adair, Blanchard, Boyer, Tresh, Schaive, Cloninger
Record: 80-50
Dusters 9, Dodgers 3
[September 6, Game 2]
Joe Horlen (14-6) took on Sandy Koufax (13-12) in what many expected to be a low-scoring pitcher's duel. Instead, the nearly 17,000 fans at Horizon Field were treated to some offensive fireworks. Duke Snider's two-run double in the 1st was answered by Johnny Blanchard's three-run homer in the bottom of the inning. A Willie Davis solo blast tied the game at 3 in the 3rd. In the 4th Jerry Adair and Johnny Schaive singled before Willie Davis made an ill-advised dive for a blooper off Horlen's bat. The ball got behind Davis and Adair scored from second to put the Dusters ahead 4-3. But in the 6th Snider and Wally Moon hit back-to-back home runs and in the 7th the fleet-footed Maury Wills scored from second when Schaive made a throwing error to first on a Jim Gilliam grounder, and it was 6-4 Dodgers. Reliever Larry Sherry walked two in the home 7th and Billy Williams hit a RBI single to close the gap but Johnny Roseboro's RBI double in the Los Angeles 8th widened it again, and the Dodgers held on to win. Horlen took the loss and the Dusters fell back to 1.5 games behind the league-leading Pirates.
Lineup: Power, Lopez, Williams, Boyer, Blanchard, Adair, Schaive, Tresh, Horlen
Record: 80-51
Dodgers 7, Dusters 5
[September 7, Game 3]
Gordy Coleman started at first base and led off in Game 3, and made the most of the opportunity by opening the game with the first of two doubles, scoring on a Hector Lopez two-bagger. Roy Gleason's solo homer in the second tied the game and in the 3rd Willie Davis hit one out of the park for two more to make it 3-1 Los Angeles. Back-to-back doubles by Coleman and Lee Maye in the home 5th set the stage for a game-tying RBI single by Billy Williams. The Dodgers went back in front in the top of the 6th and Clete Boyer tied it again in the bottom of the inning with a solo homer (his fourteenth of the season). Pinch hitter Mack Jones stretched a single into a double and stole third with nobody out in the Nevada 7th, only to be stranded. Relievers Claude Raymond and Bill Dailey held Los Angeles scoreless from the 8th inning on, and in the bottom of the 10th Johnny Blanchard picked the perfect time for his thirty-third long ball, a walk-off, two-run homer. Nevada starter Dave McNally (9-7) allowed four runs on nine hits in seven innings, while closer Bill Dailey (5-4) got the win. Maye went 3-for-5, Blanchard and Coleman 2-for-5, and Williams 2-for-4. (Blanchard had three homers and eight RBIs in the series.) The Dusters had won their eighth consecutive series and remained 1.5 games back of Pittsburgh and 1.5 games ahead of the Giants. It was the 81st victory for Nevada. "Now we know we'll at least break even this year," joked Blanchard.
