1962 Phillies bobble head

Nevada Dusters (77-49) @ Philadelphia Phillies (56-69)
September 1-3, 1962
Connie Mack Stadium, Philadelphia, PA

DL:  Roger Repoz (CF-Montana Wolves), broken ankle, 67 days.

MOVES: Doug Camilli (C) sent down to AAA Bakersfield. Cam Carreon (C) called up from AAA Bakersfield.

Philadelphia Phillies  Game 1 starting lineup:
Tony Taylor (2B), Ted Savage (LF), Don Demeter (CF), Wes Covington (RF), Jimmie Coker (C), Mel Roach (1B), Billy Klaus (3B), Bobby Wine (SS), Frank Sullivan (SP)

[September 1, Game 1]
Dave McNally (9-7) took the mound for the Dusters in the first game of the first series Nevada had played with the Phillies, hoping to turn things around after losing his last three decisions. Clete Boyer's RBI single in the 2nd gave McNally an early lead but Philadelphia tied it in the bottom of the 2nd and went ahead 3-1 in the 4th. In the 5th Ken Hubbs booted a Ted Savage grounder, allowing the batter to reach first, and then Don Demeter clubbed one over the left field fence to expand the Phillies' lead by two more. That was all she wrote for McNally (5.0ip, 7h, 0bb, 5r, 4er, 5k). His mound opponent, Frank Sullivan, was sailing through the Nevada lineup -- until the 7th. Jerry Adair's RBI single was followed by a two-run homer off Johnny Blanchard's bat. Clete Boyer hit his way on before Tony Oliva, recently of the AAA Bakersfield Bullets but on the expanded September roster, took his first Major League at-bat. Boyer stole second and Oliva brought him home with a knock up the middle that tied the game at 5. The Phillies loaded the bases in the home 8th but Jim Brewer induced Tony Gonzalez to ground out, ending the threat, and in the 9th the Dusters scored a pair of runs, one of them a solo blast by Boyer, his eleventh of the season. Closer Bill Dailey walked Savage in the bottom of the 9th, and Savage scored on a Wes Covington two-bagger, but the Dusters held on to their come-from-behind victory. Boyer was 3-for-4 on the day, with two runs, two RBIs, and a base theft.
Lineup: Power, Maye, Williams, Lopez, Adair, Blanchard, Boyer, Hubbs, McNally
Record: 78-49
Dusters 7, Phillies 6
[September 2, Game 2]
Wanting to avoid using a four-man rotation to keep his starters as rested as possible, Ben Naylor opted to put Pete Richert on the mound even though Bob Shaw was ready to go. It turned out to be a mistake, as Richert struggled from the get-go. Richert pitched out of a jam in the 1st, but gave up five hits -- all singles -- and two runs in the 2nd. Naylor replaced him with Jim Umbricht, who served up a solo homer to Don Demeter to open the Phillies 3rd. In the 4th Ted Savage tripled and scored on a Wes Covington single to make it 4-0 Philadelphia. In the 6th Savage -- who was 3-for-5 on the day -- homered to put his team on top 5-0. The Nevada batters were mystified by Phillies starter Chris Short who allowed just four hits in nine innings. The Philadelphia strategy was clear: Don't pitch to Billy Williams, who drew a walk three times in four at-bats. Tom Tresh, who started in center in place of Lee Maye (whose numbers against lefties were dismal), was 2-for-4 on the day. The seven walks issued by Short did give Nevada some baserunners, but several sharply turned double plays by the Philadelphia infield nipped Duster rallies in the bud. The loss put Richert at 5-4 on the year, while Short improved to 11-6.
Lineup: Power, Lopez, Williams, Boyer, Adair, Schaive, Tresh, Carreon, Richert
Record: 78-50
Phillies 5, Dusters 0
[September 3, Game 3]
Clete Boyer hit his twelfth homer of the season, a solo shot in the 5th to break a scoreless tie in the rubber game of the series as Nevada starter Bob Shaw (17-3) took on Philadelphia's Art Mahaffey (7-11). The Phillies tied it one frame later, but Boyer drove in Hector Lopez, who'd reached on a fielding error by Phillies left fielder Ted Savage, in the 7th to put the Dusters on top 2-1. Lopez scored the next Nevada run, too, as he reached on an infield single in the 9th, moved to third on a Jerry Adair knock, and scored when Johnny Blanchard singled through the hole. Bill Dailey shut the Phillies down in the bottom of the 9th and the Dusters had won their seventh series in a row. They remained in second place in the NL, one game behind the Pirates (80-49), who were coming off a sweep of the Mets, and 1.5 games ahead of the Giants (79-53). Shaw collected his eighteenth win, Dailey his fourteenth save, and Boyer, Adair and Blanchard all went 2-for-4. The following day the Dusters headed home to take on the Dodgers for the final time in '62.
