The Story of a Major League Baseball Franchise
Dusters @ Mets
August 20-22, 1962
What Really Happened in 1962
8.1--Boston's Bill Monbouquette pitches a no-hitter in a 1-0 Red Sox victory over the White Sox.
8.1--The Tigers and A's tie an AL record with 32 walks drawn in a doubleheader.
8.2--Philadelphia Phillies pitcher Art Mahaffey hits a grand slam to lead his team to a 9-4 triumph over the Mets.
8.3--Frank Thomas (NYM) becomes the second player in NL history to hit six homers in three consecutive games (two in each game).
8.4--After a doubleheader loss to the Mets, Reds skipper Fred Hutchinson is so disgusted with his team that he refuses to enter the visitors' clubhouse at the Polo Grounds until his players have departed the premises.
8.11--The Dodgers accuse the Giants of wetting down the field at Candlestick to slow LA's fleet-footed shortstop Maury Wills. The scheme earns San Francisco skipper Alvin Dark the soubriquet of "Swamp Fox."
8.15--The Mets tie a ML record for pinch-hit home runs in a single game with two (Choo-Choo Coleman and Jim Hickman) in a 8-7 loss to the Phillies.
8.16--Frank Robinson (CIN) hits two homers for the second night in a row, making nine in eight games.
8.19--In a 21-7 trouncing of the A's by the Yankees, Elston Howard has two homers and eight RBIs, while Mickey Mantle hits a grand slam and seven ribbies. Gino Cimoli, Wayne Causey and Billy Bryan hit back-to-back-to-back homers in the Philadelphia 7th.
8.20--Roger Maris hits his 49th home run and Mickey Mantle his 46th as the Yankees win both halves of a doubleheader with the Indians.
8.24--Dodger skipper Leo Durocher nearly dies from an allergic reaction to a penincillin injection administered in the Polo Grounds clubhouse.
8.25--Pirates players call off a proposed strike to protest a rain-out being rescheduled for the night before a doubleheader.
8.26--The Cubs set a NL record with three straight sac bunts in a 4-1 win over the Braves.
8.30--The 3-2 Giants victory over the Braves ties a ML record with all five runs scored on homers.

New York Mets Game 1 starting lineup:
John DeMerit (RF), Bobby Del Greco (CF), Gil Hodges (1B), Frank Thomas (LF), Felix Mantilla (SS), Don Zimmer (2B), Harry Chiti (C), Bobby Pfeil (3B), Dennis Musgraves (SP)

[August 20, Game 1]
The Dusters traveled to the Big Apple for a series with the Mets and faced 18-year-old rookie Dennis Musgraves in his first major league start. (Starters Camilo Pascual and Jim Kaat were on the DL.) Musgraves performed well, giving up three hits in seven innings. But one of those hits was a Billy Williams homer that put the Dusters on top 2-0 in the 3rd. New York rightfielder John DeMerit's RBI triple in the 5th cut the Nevada lead in half. Sensing that starter Pete Richert was fading, Ben Naylor inserted reliever Jim Umbricht in the 6th, but Gil Hodges reached on a fielding error by Billy Williams and later scored to tie the game. Vic Power tripled in the Nevada 8th and scored on a squeeze play as Lee Maye laid down a perfect bunt along the first base line. Bob Duliba held the Mets scoreless in the home 8th and Claude Raymond did likewise in the 9th for his eleventh save of the year. Umbricht got the win and Billy Williams his 24th homer. The Pirates and the Giants also won.
Lineup: Power, Maye, Williams, Lopez, Blanchard, Boyer, Hubbs, Schaive, Richert
Record: 71-47
Dusters 3, Mets 2
[August 21, Game 2]
With the Reds and Giants next in line on the schedule and ace Bob Shaw taking the hill, Ben Naylor decided to rest starters Billy Williams and Vic Power, placing Mack Jones in center and Lee Maye in right. Coleman made the most of his appearance on lineup card, going 2-for-3 (both doubles) on the day while Maye went 3-for-4. But it was Hector Lopez and Johnny Blanchard who got the RBI singles that gave the Dusters a 2-0 victory as Shaw pitched a complete game shutout to improve his record to 17-2. The Mets had a couple of scoring opportunities but always fell short -- in the 1st, with a man on first and third and one out, Gus Bell grounded into a 5-4-3 twin killing, and in the 7th, with men on second and third and two out, pinch-hitter Gil Hodges grounded out. Shaw finished with a line of seven hits, three walks and four K's and the Dusters found themselves in second place in the NL, still two games back of the Pirates (who won their game) and a half-game up on the Giants (who lost).
Lineup: Coleman, Maye, Lopez, Blanchard, Boyer, Hubbs, Jones, Schaive, Shaw
Record: 72-47
Dusters 2, Mets 0
[August 22, Game 3]
Catcher Cam Carreon, recently acquired in a trade with the White Sox, got his first start as backstop as Tony Cloninger (7-7) took on lefty Jim Archer (6-5). It was the top of the Nevada lineup that gave Archer problems, with Vic Power going 3-for-5 with two runs and Lee Maye 2-for-4 with a run scored. Both singled in the first, Billy Williams reached on an error to fill the bases, and Archer walked Hector Lopez for the first Nevada run. A Clete Boyer grounder scored Maye, and it was 2-0 Dusters. Power opened the 5th with a single and later scored on a Lopez grounder. The first hit Cloninger gave up was a solo homer by Gus Bell in the Mets 6th. Boyer's RBI triple in the 8th made it 4-1 Nevada. New York scored a run in the 8th and got a baserunner as far as third when Carreon allowed a passed ball in the 9th, but Cloninger got the last out and won his eighth decision with a complete game performance in which he allowed four hits, walked four, and struck out six. The Dusters had not lost a series since July and were one game behind the NL-leading Pirates and a half-game ahead of the third-place Giants.
Lineup: Power, Maye, Williams, Lopez, Boyer, Schaive, Hubbs, Carreon, Cloninger
Record: 73-47
