[August 13, Game 1]
Over 18,000 fans -- a record crowd at Horizon Field -- were on hand to watch the Dusters take on the NL-leading Pittsburgh Pirates in a crucial series. Nevada played without the services of closer Bill Dailey and second baseman Jerry Adair, while the Bucs were without first baseman Dick Stuart and three starting pitchers -- Joe Gibbon, Harvey Haddix and Tom Sturdivant. Nevada starter Tony Cloninger hoped to even his record at 7-7, while the Duster hitters had expectations of taking advantage of Pittsburgh's Earl Francis (0-2). But Cloninger gave up two runs on seven hits and lasted five innings, while Francis held the Dusters scoreless through the first four. Leading 2-0 in the 5th, Francis walked the bases full for Lee Maye who doubled for two ribbies. Billy Williams singled in two more before Johnny Blanchard hit his 27th homer, a three-run shot over the right field fence, and just like that it was 7-2 Nevada. The Pirates picked up a run in the 6th against reliever Jim Brewer, but the Dusters got it back in their half of the inning and the Bucs managed just one more run, in the 9th. Cloninger got his wish and Maye went 2-for-4, and the Dusters had won four in a row.
Lineup: Coleman, Maye, Williams, Lopez, Boyer, Blanchard, Tresh, Schaive, Cloninger
Record: 67-45
Dusters 8, Pirates 4
[August 14, Game 2]
Nevada's hopes of gaining even more ground on the league-leading Pirates ran into an obstacle named Wilmer "Vinegar Bend" Mizell (6-2), who was pitted against Dave McNally (9-5). McNally pitched an outstanding game, allowing just one run on two hits in eight innings of work. That one run came as a result of a walk issued to Dick Groat to open the Pittsburgh 4th. It was the only walk allowed by McNally, but it was costly, as Groat went to third on a Roberto Clemente double and scored when Joe Torre sailed a sac fly to left. Mizell allowed two hits, too, but the Dusters couldn't score a run against him, or reliever Al McBean. Nevada had a man on third with two outs in the 8th, but McBean fanned Hector Lopez to end the threat, while a Clete Boyer single to open the 9th was erased by a double play.
Lineup: Power, Maye, Williams, Lopez, Boyer, Blanchard, Hubbs, Schaive, McNally
Record: 67-46
Pirates 1, Dusters 0
[August 15, Game 3]
The Pirates starting rotation was so wracked with injuries that skipper Danny Murtaugh was forced to start Earl Francis again -- and paid the price. Francis lasted just two innings, allowing five runs (two earned). Back to back doubles by Hector Lopez and Johnny Blanchard gave the Dusters a 3-0 lead in the 1st. In the next inning Lee Maye reached on an error before Billy Williams cranked a two-run homer to center. Pinch-hitter Willie Stargell hit his own two-run shot in the Pirates 3rd to close the gap and got another run in the 5th to make it 5-3. But in the bottom of the inning Williams hit another two-run blast, this time to left-center. Barney Schultz relieved starter Nevada Pete Richert (5.0ip, 5h, 0bb, 3r, 3er, 3k, 2.48era) and gave up a run, and the Bucs collected two more in the 7th with Bob Duliba on the mound to make it a 7-6 ballgame. Bill Mazeroski homered off Claude Raymond in the top of the 9th to tie it but in the bottom of the 10th, with a man on first and third and one out, Vic Power hit an RBI single to win the game and the series for Nevada. Power was mobbed by his teammates. "That one was big," allowed Ben Naylor. Raymond was awarded the win and went to 5-1. Williams was 3-for-5 with three runs scored, four RBIs, and his 21st and 22nd home runs of the season, not to mention six RBIs in the series. The Dusters found themselves three games back of Pittsburgh and, after a day off, would host the Bucs for a series that loomed even bigger than this one. Unfortunately, starter Joe Horlen was once again on the DL, this time for three days with a mild elbow inflammation.
