[July 27, Game 1]
The Dusters launched an 18-game homestand with a series against the NL-leading Pittsburgh Pirates, with ace Bob Shaw (14-2) pitted against Bob Friend (8-7) and a record crowd of nearly 17,500 in attendance. Trailing 2-0 going into the bottom of the 4th, Hector Lopez doubled (his first of three on the day) and then scored on a two-bagger off the bat of Clete Boyer. The score remained 2-1 until the bottom of the 9th, which Mack Jones (playing center field in place of Lee Maye) opened with a walk. Lopez hit his second double of the game and, with men on second and third, Johnny Blanchard grounded to third and Jones was thrown out at home. But Boyer singled to right, knocking in Lopez and tying the game. The Pirates juiced the bases in the 12th with Bob Dailey on the mound, but came away empty. In the next frame, with men on first and third and one out, the Pirates executed a squeeze play that scored Dick Stuart from third and won the game. Bob Duliba (4-4) took the loss. Shaw allowed two runs on six hits in his eight innings. Both Lopez and Boyer were 3-for-5 on the day; the rest of the team managed just two hits.
Lineup: Power, Jones, Williams, Lopez, Blanchard, Boyer, Adair, Schaive, Shaw
Record: 55-42
Pirates 3, Dusters 2
[July 28, Game 2]
The Dusters struck first in the second game as Vic Power walked and later scored on a Hector Lopez single in the 1st. Starter Dave McNally (7-4) held the Bucs scoreless until the 5th, which Howie Goss opened with a triple; Pittsburgh starter Joe Gibbon laid down a bunt that scored Goss from third. In the bottom of the inning the Dusters had men on second and third with only one out and got a run to regain the lead. In the Pirates 8th Pete Richert got into a jam as Dick Groat singled and Roberto Clemente drew a walk, but Dick Stuart hit a grounder to third baseman Clete Boyer, who turned a double play, and Joe Torre grounded out. In the bottom of the 8th Billy Williams clubbed a two-run homer -- his 18th of the season -- over the center field fence to give the Dusters a comfortable 4-1 margin. The Pirates scored a single run in the 9th. McNally (5.0ip, 6h, 0bb, 1r, 1er, 4k, 2.41era) got the win and Richert was credited with his third save of the year. Williams was 2-for-4 on the day, Lopez 2-for-3 with a walk, maintaining his team-leading .330 batting average.
Lineup: Power, Maye, Williams, Lopez, Blanchard, Boyer, Adair, Schaive, McNally
Record: 56-42
Dusters 4, Pirates 2
[July 29, Game 3]
Steve Barber (4-8) took on Vern Law (10-11) in the rubber game of the series, and Barber got into trouble early, walking a pair of batters in the top of the 1st which, combined with singles by Dick Groat and Joe Torre, added up to two Pittsburgh runs. They added two more in the 4th, but in the Nevada half of the inning a double by Lee Maye, singles by Clete Boyer and Jerry Adair, and a Pirate error that allowed Hector Lopez to reach base culminated in three Duster runs and a 4-3 score. Reliever Barney Schultz, recently acquired in a trade with the Chicago Cubs, made his first appearance for Nevada in the 5th, during which Groat singled and scored on a Roberto Clemente triple. The Pirates added another run in the 8th at the expense of reliever Pete Richert. With two out in the bottom of the 9th Tom Tresh walked and Johnny Schaive reached on another Pittsburgh error, but pinch hitter Gordy Coleman lined out to end the game. Barber lasted four innings, allowing four runs on three hits. Pirates third baseman Dick Groat went 3-for-4 for the second day in a row, and 8-for-13 for the series. The Dusters found themselves eight games behind Pittsburgh and 4.5 behind the Giants. Conn Hudson conceded that he was disappointed. "I was hoping we'd trim their lead by at least one game. Instead, we fell further behind."
Lineup: Power, Maye, Lopez, Boyer, Adair, Blanchard, Tresh, Schaive, Barber
Record: 56-43
Pirates 7, Dusters 3
