[Game 1, June 6]
Back home after the short road trip, the Dusters were outhit and outpitched in the first game of the series as Steve Barber gave up five runs on eight hits, lasted just four innings and suffered his sixth loss of the year while San Francisco starter Billy Pierce got his sixth win. The Dusters scored a run in the 2nd but the Giants scored two in their half of the inning and added four more in the 5th as Orlando Cepeda's three-run homer knocked Barber out of the game. In the 6th Cepeda stung reliever Jim Umbricht with another dinger, this one for two runs, and it was 8-1 Giants. Clete Boyer's solo shot in the 7th, his eighth home run of the year, helped a little, but one inning later the Dusters mounted a rally that, for a few moments, gave the 14,000 fans on hand renewed hope -- a double by Mack Jones and singles by Vic Power, Hector Lopez and Tom Tresh added two runs and loaded the bases, but Billy O'Dell took over for Pierce and got the next two outs to end the inning with the Giants still up 8-4, the final tally.
Lineup: Jones, Power, Williams, Lopez, Adair, Tresh, Boyer, Blanchard, Barber
Record: 33-28
Giants 8, Dusters 4
[Game 2, June 7]
The matchup of Nevada's Dave McNally (6-0) and San Francisco's Gaylord Perry (5-5), two promising rookie stars, was thought to be the headline for the second game of the series, but McNally was gone after five innings in which he allowed four runs on five hits. The Dusters seemed completely overmatched yet again. Vic Power's two-run homer in the 3rd gave them an early lead, but the Giants scored four runs in the 5th, three of them off Jim Davenport's bomb to left-center. Ed Bailey's two-run blast in the 7th added two more and the Dusters were on the short end of a 7-2 score. It got worse. Orlando Cepeda hit a two-run double off reliever Jim Brewer in the 8th and even though Nevada scored a run in the bottom of the inning it looked to be over. Don Larsen took the mound for the Giants in the home 9th. Jerry Adair reached on a fielding error by second baseman Ernie Bowman and Clete Boyer homered for two. Then Tom Tresh and Johnny Schaive hit their way on, pinch hitter Lou Johnson singled in a run, Vic Power did likewise, and it was 9-7 with two on and nobody out when Hector Lopez came to the plate and knocked one out of the park, a walk-off homer that made it 10-9 Dusters. The seven-run inning marked the biggest comeback in the club's brief history, and stunned the winners almost as much as it did the San Francisco Giants.
Lineup: Power, Lopez, Williams, Blanchard, Adair, Boyer, Tresh, Schaive, McNally
Record: 34-28
Dusters 10, Giants 9
[Game 3, June 8]
After yesterday's miracle comeback the Dusters and their fans were in high spirits when the third game of the season got underway -- but the Giants were quick to rain on the parade as Willie McCovey's two-run homer in the 3rd gave San Francisco a 3-0 lead. Nevada didn't have to wait long for one of its patented big innings, however. Giants starter Jack Sanford issued two walks and Hector Lopez singled to load the bases in the home 4th. Johnny Blanchard's single to left scored two, Johnny Schaive reached on an error to juice the bases again, and Mack Jones singled into the right field corner for two more. Nevada starter Bob Shaw contributed his own RBI single and the Dusters led 5-3. After that, Shaw didn't give the Giants much of anything to work with, while Nevada added two more on a Johnny Schaive triple in the 8th. Shaw improved his record to 8-2 with the 7-3 victory, allowing three runs on five hits through seven. The Dusters had beaten the Giants two games to one, and yet remained in fourth place in the NL, 1.5 games back of third place San Francisco. Though it didn't make much difference in the standings, Conn Hudson knew it mattered a lot where the confidence of his players was concerned.
Lineup: Power, Lopez, Williams, Adair, Boyer, Blanchard, Schaive, Jones, Shaw
Record: 35-28
