[May 4, Game 1]
After three days off, the Nevada Dusters flew to Chavez Ravine to start a 12-game road trip. Ben Naylor knew that his guys would have to play mistake-free baseball to beat Don Drysdale and the Los Angeles Angels (15-12). Unfortunately, they didn't. Nevada starter Joe Horlen battled valiantly to keep the potent Dodgers offense in check, and more-or-less succeeded through five innings. Los Angeles scored a run in the 1st and another in the 2nd, but the Dusters cut that lead in half when Tom Tresh stretched a single into a double to open the Nevada 4th, then scored on a Jerry Adair single. In the Los Angeles 6th, with a man on third and two outs, Jerry Adair booted what should have been a routine ground out that allowed Johnny Roseboro to reach and the man at third to score. Then Roseboro stole second and scored on a Larry Burright single, and it was 4-1 Dodgers. Los Angeles added a run in the 7th when reliever Jim Brewer walked the first two batters; the lead runner, Maury Wills, later scored on a Duke Snider sac fly. Drysdale improved to 3-0 with his complete game performance, striking out nine Dusters in the process. Lead-off man Vic Power seemed to be the only Duster in the lineup who didn't have trouble with Drysdale -- he was 3-for-4 on the day. Horlen (6.0ip, 7h, 3bb, 4r, 3er, 2k) suffered his second loss of the season.
Lineup: Power, Maye, Williams, Tresh, Adair, Boyer, Schaive, Blanchard, Horlen
Record: 16-15
Dodgers 5, Dusters 1
[May 5, Game 2]
"It was a lot of pressure for a 19-year-old rookie," said Ben Naylor, "but we needed a win badly." And Dave McNally (4-0), with Sandy Koufax as his mound opponent, delivered. So did the Duster defense. In the Los Angeles 1st, after Maury Wills singled, Jim Gilliam reached second on a fielding error by Johnny Blanchard. But Gilliam was doubled off second when Willie Davis lined out to center, and McNally struck out Hondo Howard to end the threat. The Dusters scored in the 3rd when Hector Lopez, in his first game back from the DL, followed a Vic Power double with one of his own. Thanks in part to another Nevada error, the Dodgers had two men on in the 4th when Walter Alston saw fit to pinch hit for Koufax. McNally pitched out of the jam. In the 7th Lopez singled to right, scoring McNally from second to make it 2-0 Nevada. In the 8th a third Duster error, this one committed by third baseman Clete Boyer, put a Howard on third from whence he scored on a Johnny Roseboro single. Everyone thought McNally would pitch the 9th -- he already had a couple of complete games under his belt. Instead, Nails called upon closer Claude Raymond, who came through for his fifth save. McNally was 5-0 on the year and got two hits and a run scored in the game. The baseball world began to sit up and take notice. Lopez was 2-for-4 with both RBIs. The speedy Maury Wills was caught trying to steal second on two occasions. "Nails was so relieved," Jerry Adair told reporters, "he forgot to gripe about all the mistakes we made."
Lineup: Power, Lopez, Williams, Tresh, Adair, Boyer, Schaive, Blanchard, McNally
Record: 17-15
Dusters 2, Dodgers 1
[May 6, Game 3]
"Tony pitched a great game," said Conn Hudson of starter Tony Cloninger, who allowed just two hits in six innings of work. The first one, though, was a two-run blast by Duke Snider in the Dodgers 1st -- two runs because a throwing error by Cloninger allowed Wally Moon to reach first prior to Snider's at-bat. In the Dusters 5th Mack Jones, starting in center for Tom Tresh, opened with a double and scored on a Johnny Blanchard single. Unfortunately, Blanchard was thrown out at home when Gordy Coleman singled up the middle, and Nevada had to settle for the one run. In the 7th Snider homered again, this time off reliever Jim Brewer. The Dusters loaded the bases in their half of the 8th but could only squeeze one run out of Dodger relief man Larry Sherry. But in the home 8th Brewer allowed three hits for four runs, including a three-run homer into Dodger Stadium's left field bleachers by outfielder Ron Fairly, and Los Angeles won decisively, 7-2. Relief pitcher Jim Umbricht made his first appearance as a Duster and retired all three Dodger batters he faced. Mack Jones made the most of his start, going 2-for-3 with a walk and a run scored.
Lineup: Coleman, Lopez, Williams, Adair, Boyer, Hubbs, Jones, Blanchard, Cloninger
Record: 17-16
