Cubs fans watch the action in Game 1 of the series, 25 May 1963

Chicago Cubs (28-20) @ Nevada Dusters (37-8)
May 25-27, 1963
Horizon Field (Las Vegas)
DL: Sandy Alomar (2b-Tucson Stingers A), bruised knee, 6 days.
Chicago Cubs Game 1 starting lineup:
Game 1, May 25
The Cubs came out swinging against starter Pete Richert, as Lou Brock and Ernie Banks singled their way on prior to a Hank Aaron roundtripper that made it 3-0 Chicago in the 1st. Glen Hobbie held the Dusters to one hit in the first three frames, but in the 4th the Nevada lineup figured him out and, with the help of a Cubs error, collected four runs on four hits to take the lead. In the 5th, Tom Tresh hit a two-run homer against reliever Cal Koonce. But that was just the beginning; the Dusters combined four singles with a pair of walks to tack on five more runs for an 11-3 advantage. In the 6th, Bob Duliba pitched out of a bases loaded situation, and Claude Raymond retired six straight in the last two frames. Maury Wills and Lee Mayes finished 3-for-5 while Billy Williams went 3-for-4 while Claude Raymond was awarded the win to go 5-0. "I almost hate to admit it," said Conn Hudson, "but I don't really worry anymore if we're three or four runs down. Our guys are capable of scoring a lot of runs in a very short time."
Lineup: Wills (.339), Power (.321), Maye (.367), Williams (.331), Tresh (.298), Boyer (.321), Blanchard (.194), Adair (.205), Richert (2-0)
Record: 38-8
Dusters 12, Cubs 3
Game 2, May 26
Lou Brock drove the first pitch Nevada's Jim Bouton threw into the left field bleachers for a solo home run, but the Dusters got that run right back as Maury Wills doubled and scored on a Vic Power two-sacker to tie it 1-all after one. In the 3rd the Dusters jumped all over Chicago's Jack Curtis, getting six hits -- all singles -- for four runs. Ben Naylor pinch hit Billy Williams for Bouton with two on and two out, explaining afterward that he thought it possible they could "put it away with one swing of the bat." Williams flied out, but the Dusters bullpen filled in admirably for the remainder of the game -- as Nails knew they could. Bob Duliba gave up a run in the 4th, but that was all that he and fellow firemen Jim Brewer and Bob Dailey would allow. Wills, Power, Ken Hubbs and Cam Carreon all went 2-for-4 and Tom Tresh was 2-for-3 as the Dusters compiled twelve hits -- making twenty-six for the series thus far -- and Brewer improved his record to 3-2. With their seventeenth consecutive victory, Nevada increased their lead in the NL to eleven games over the second-place Cardinals, who lost today.
Lineup: Wills, Power, Maye, Tresh, Boyer, Lopez, Hubbs, Carreon, Bouton
Record: 39-8
Dusters 6, Cubs 2
Game 3, May 27
Cubs fans didn't think things could get any worse than the 12-3 drubbing they suffered in Game 1 of the series -- but they were wrong. The Dusters steamrolled over Chicago starter Dave Everson, collecting eight runs on 12 hits in the 5.2 innings that the rookie lasted on the hill. Then they proceeded to victimize reliever Dan Schneider for three more runs in 1.1 innings, and Chuck Dobson for five runs on six hits in a single frame. Billy Williams hit a two-run homer to contribute to a five-run 1st, and then homered again for two more runs in the 4th. A Hank Aaron shot to right-center for three ribbies made it 8-5 Nevada in the bottom of the 5th and so it remained until the 7th, when the Dusters added three to their tally, before blowing the game wide open in the 8th. Cam Carreon hit a three-run roundtripper prior to a two-run single off the bat of Williams -- who accounted for seven RBI on the day. Tony Oliva, starting in right field, went 3-for-3, Maury Wills 3-for-6 and Carreon 4-for-5 with five ribbies. Starter Joe Horlen didn't have a particularly good day -- five runs on ten hits through five -- but he didn't need to have one to improve his record to 4-0 on the year. The 16 runs set a club record, and the winning streak was extended to 18 games.
