New York Mets (8-25) @ Nevada Dusters 25-8)
May 10-12, 1963
Horizon Field (Las Vegas, NV)
DL: none

New York Mets Game 1 starting lineup:
Charlie Neal (2b), Jim Marshall (1b), Frank Thomas (lf), Duke Snider (rf), Jim Hickman (cf), Bobby Pfeil (3b), Hobie Landrith (c), Al Moran (ss), Jerry Koosman (sp)

Game 1, May 10
The Dusters steamrolled over Mets starter Jerry Koosman, collecting seven runs on six hits in the first two innings. In the 1st, Vic Power doubled and scored on a Lee Maye triple, Billy Williams knocked in Maye with a single, Clete Boyer drew a two-out walk before Jerry Adair hit an RBI double and Cam Carreon (3-for-4 on the day) singled in two more. In the next frame the Dusters tacked on four more, two on a Boyer home run. In the 3rd Power homered to left to make it 11-2. Tony Cloninger served up a couple of home run balls -- one to Jim Hickman in the 2nd and another to Frank Thomas in the 4th -- but came away with his fifth win, allowing four runs (three of them earned) on five hits in 6.2 innings. Maye finished 3-for-4 while Power was 2-for-3 with a walk, three runs, and two ribbies. Having won nine of their last ten, the Dusters found themselves 6.5 games ahead of St. Louis and Chicago.
Lineup: Wills, Power, Maye, Williams, Lopez, Boyer, Adair, Carreon, Cloninger
Record: 26-8
Dusters 11, Mets 4

Game 2, May 11
With a series against the Giants coming up, Ben Naylor rested some of his regulars, starting Ken Hubbs at second and Lou Johnson in right. Both went 0-for-3, and Johnson committed an error that allowed a run to score in the Mets 6th, tying the game at 2-all. But as so often happened, the Dusters came back; Lee Maye doubled to open the home 6th prior to Clete Boyer's homer -- his eleventh of the year -- into the left field bleachers. Dave McNally and reliever Jim Brewer allowed just one Met to get on base after that, and Nevada won its fifth in a row, with McNally (7.2ip, 4h, 1bb, 2r, 2er, 3k, 3.02era) improving to 5-1 and Brewer notching his first save. Lead-off man Maury Wills went 3-for-4 with a run and a RBI.
Lineup: Wills, Power, Maye, Lopez, Boyer, Johnson, Hubbs, Carreon, McNally
Record: 27-8
Dusters 4, Mets 2

Game 3, May 12
With Jerry Adair out three days with a strained neck, Ken Hubbs again got the nod at second base, while rookie Tony Oliva spelled Lee Maye in right while Maye took over for Billy Williams in left. Jim Bouton took the mound for the first time since his stint on the DL, still looking for his first win. The Dusters jumped out in front with a pair of runs in the 2nd, but New York starter Roger Craig hung tough and allowed his team to cut that deficit in half with a run in the 6th. The Dusters finally got to Craig in the 8th. Maury Wills started things with a two-out single. Then Vic Power singled and a Hector Lopez two-bagger scored Wills from third. An error by Mets centerfielder Jim Hickman allowed Power to score, making it 4-1 Nevada. And so it remained, with Bouton (5.0ip, 1h, 1bb, 0r, 0er, 3k, 1.80era) went 1-0 and Power finished the night 3-for-4. TheDusters had three days off before taking on the San Francisco Giants at Candlestick Park.
Lineup: Wills, Power, Oliva, Maye, Boyer, Tresh, Blanchard, Hubbs, Bouton
Record: 28-8
Dusters 4, Mets 1
